Even in the most traditional decorating scheme for the holidays, most of us like to add a few touches that are whimsical and maybe even evoke a memory of childhood. One of the easiest ways to accomplish this is by adding a Christmas train to your overall holiday decorating scheme.

There are several good craft books that will help you construct your Christmas train. These books can easily be found at your local library or at you a craft store. The instructions will come with a list of the materials you need, with easy to follow plans on how to assemble the materials into a viable Christmas train. Often, there will be suggestions on ways to customize the train so it is unique for your home.

If you are not the crafty sort, many craft stores will carry kits you can by. With all the components already completed, you need only to paint the pieces to your liking and attach the cars to the Christmas train engine, and you are ready to decide what special items you wish to display in each car.

Christmas goodies, such as nuts, candies, popcorn balls and other edible treats are favorites for the cars of the Christmas train. As alternatives, you may consider wrapping small gifts that can spill out the tops of the cars. This is especially a great idea to use for a holiday party, as you can display the train near your entryway, and invite guests to select a small gift as they depart.

Christmas trains also are a great way to set off your Christmas tree. By placing a track around the base of the treeline, you can position your train so that it gives the appearance of delivering all sorts of holiday goodness. If you have pets, it would be a good idea to forgo placing edibles in the cars. Ornaments, small figurines, or small wrapped gifts would be of less interest to your cat or dog.

If you are looking for something that will give your Christmas decorating a little boost, consider adding a Christmas train to your decorations this year. You may be surprised at how much enjoyment you, you family, and visitors to your home receive from this time simple yet eye catching addition.
